The institute
A programme built slowly, and described honestly
The Rihla Fellowship is the flagship programme of The Rihla Institute.
The institute was formed to build durable, serious institutions for Muslim American students, beginning with a fellowship that treats travel, worship, and study as one continuous formation rather than three separate activities.
What exists is a pilot journey that proved the idea, a programme model shaped by what that journey taught, and a commitment to say only what is true about the work.

The meaning of rihla
The journey has a history
Rihla is the journey undertaken in search of knowledge. The word predates this fellowship by centuries, and it has always carried more than travel: it describes leaving what is familiar, studying with people you would never otherwise meet, and returning changed.
The passage that follows moves through that older journey, from a departure in Tangier to a world that opened far beyond the pilgrimage that began it.

In 1325, a young scholar left Tangier intending to reach Makkah. He was twenty one, and travelling alone.
The pilgrimage road carried him through Tunis, Alexandria, Cairo, and Damascus, and he studied with teachers in every city he entered.
He was not only travelling. He was gathering knowledge, and the scholars he met became the reason to keep going.
He reached Madinah, and then Makkah. The journey he had set out to complete was complete.
He kept going for twenty nine years, across East Africa, Anatolia, Central Asia, India, Southeast Asia, and China.
The journey became an education in the world.
The form of the journey changes.
The purpose endures.

How we work
Principles that govern the institute
Say only what is true
The fellowship is described exactly as it stands today. Nothing about scale, funding, or outcomes is stated more confidently than the record allows.
Formation before scale
The work is designed for depth first. Growth follows from a programme that holds together, not from an ambition to grow quickly.
Dignity in every detail
Photography, language, and hospitality are treated with the same care as logistics. Fellows are guests, not content.
